Over the past three decades there has been a long steady war taking place in America, a war on the Middle Class and the Labor Movement that is the core support of the Democratic Party. It is also the core of the American economic power plant, the driver to move it forward and keep it expanding. Decisions were made on the Republican side to destroy the base of the Democratic party by any means necessary, no matter the cost to the country, and it has resulted in the most massive transfer of wealth in this nations history from the Middle Class to the upper 1-2%. It has been done by demonising Labor, Government, Science, Intellectualism and Education in general. The rabid war on taxation and the fiction tax cuts are some sort of panacea has served to strip Government of the resources necessary to provide for a vibrant civil society.
Today we have seen the culmination of this effort in the actions in Wisconsin and Michigan, the heart of the Labor Movement, in stripping Union Collective Bargaining rights from Public Service Employees. Oh sure it was framed under the guise of being fiscally responsible, until in Wisconsin where anything having to do with Financial Actions requires a quorum to proceed, the Republicans stripped the Union Busting part out of the bill and passed it as a separate entity, giving the lie to their own rhetoric that it was all about fiscal responsibility when in point of fact it was about killing unions in the State.
There has been a plethora of rhetoric from the Far Right promising to shrink the size of Government to the point it could be drowned in a bathtub. A Drumbeat from the vox Republica in the form of FOX News, Commentators such as William Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter and the like, vilifying the Liberal and Progressive side of the aisle.
Meanwhile all the regulations that kept the Financial Industry Stable were stripped out by people like Phill Graham of TX, Campaign Finance restrictions that leveled the playing field between the Corporations who have no allegiance to this country and Unions and Average Citizens who do by a Conservative Supreme Court that is anything but Conservative. In fact this is one of the most activist courts in our History under Chief Justice Roberts. The travesty of the Citizens United decision granting far greater rights to Corporations to pour unlimited funds into the political process drowning out the voice of any Union or other Advocacy group by several orders of magnitude.
I only hope that the blatant naked power plays the past three months will serve as a wake up call to Middle Class Americans that we need to organize and fight back every way we can to counter the actions of the Republican extremists.
