102 year old woman in desperate financial straights has power and water cut off in the middle of a heat wave and ends up in the hospital. Good news part story, Firefighters pool funds to pay her electric and water bill and enough to keep it going through the summer. It begs the question though of how we are to deal with the very elderly living on their own?

It makes you wonder how we are to deal with an aging population who are increasingly living on their own into their 100's. Do we just turn our backs on them and let whatever happens to them happen? Or do we look for ways that the community can keep a friendly eye on them so they DON'T end up in the hospital beacuse the Power Company cut off the lights?

First...thank goodness for the Firefighters!!! And, thank you to them, also.

Second...I think that any one that knows of an elderly neighbor, should at the least, keep an eye out for them and at the most, make sure they are spoken to every day and asked if they need anything.

Granted, many elderly would not admit they need any type of help, but, one never knows until they ask!

Agree Rachel, how some one can sit idly by when a neighbor is in trouble just astounds me.
